AFI SHARES 100 SONGS AND 100 MEMORIES
By Judy Thorburn

The American Film Institute has just released its list of the top 100 songs from the first 100 years of films. The newest…100 Years – 100 Songs, marks the seventh in its lineup of other  top 100  lists that include “Heroes and Villains”, “Passions”, “Thrills”, “Laughs”, “Stars” and “Movies”. These rank as the most memorable songs from the movies which touched our hearts, and which will forever exemplify our culture, and be a part of our collective memories.

Topping the list of most unforgettable songs are such beloved melodies as “Over the Rainbow” by Judy Garland from the 1939 film “The Wizard Of Oz”, “As Time Goes By” from “Casablanca”, “Singin’ In The Rain”, “Moon River”, “White Christmas”,  sharing the list with 95 more songs we all know and love.

As with all the other previous lists, they were presented in a special 3 hour television broadcast. This year, the show was hosted by John Travolta.  This, the seventh in the series of critically acclaimed television events, showcased each of the songs judged on the basis of their cultural impact and which resonate in the American heritage as an enduring legacy for most Americans.

The 100 were chosen from 400 nominees.  The earliest film to have its song included on the list was the 1932 classic “Love Me Tonight” with the song “Isn’t It Romantic” sung by Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald.  The most recent film “Chicago” made it with “All That Jazz” sung by Catherine Zeta Jones and Renee Zellweger.

The following is the entire list of winning songs.
